About this product

Bancha is a kind of green tea drunk in Japan, which is referred as low-grade tea in the tea market. Also, it may indicate the tea cultivated by local or homemade.
Its production method is almost the same as Sencha, but the tea leaves are harvested after summer (which is also called 3rd & 4th harvest), the period to fallow, and fertilize the tea field for the next term. When harvested at this period of the year, Bancha is called "sanbancha"(三番茶) or "yonbancha"(四番茶) meaning respectively 3rd & 4th harvest.
Bancha is unlike Sencha, using mature leaves which are rich in catechin and with less caffeine. That is the reason why the flavor of Bancha is light but with a bit of bitterness.
Depending on the region, its definition might be different. In some areas, people use Bancha for making Hōjicha and enjoying its roasted flavor.
